The cult \"Spodek\" is a sports and entertainment hall. It is an icon of Katowice and one of the most recognizable architectural structures in Poland. This extremely bold structure was created 49 years ago and it still impresses with its shape.
The architects who designed the Spodek were selected in 1959 in a competition announced by the Association of Polish Architects. The team of designers from the Office of Studies and Typical Designs of Industrial Construction from Warsaw included the architects: Maciej Gintowt and Maciej Krasiński. The author of the structure of the Spodek was prof. Eng. Wacław Zalewski, a genius constructor, author of the construction of the Katowice railway station and the Warsaw Supersam. A collaborator of prof. Zalewski was Andrzej Żórawski. An ardent supporter of building a modern hall in the center of Katowice was the Silesian voivode, General Jerzy Ziętek, who wanted it to be a symbol of the city. It was opened in 1971. The hotel was modernized through a competition in 2017. and the winner was an architectural studio from Kielce - 2G STUDIO MSc. arch. Wojciech Gwizdak. The toilets in the building are equipped with Roca products.
